T-cell surface glycoprotein CD8 alpha chain (CD8a) is a single-pass type I membrane protein. Expressed on thymocytes, mature T cells and NK cells, CD8 participates in MHC class I antigen recognition and T-cell activation signal transduction. CD8 consists of α and β polypeptide chains. The Ig domain of CD8α regulates its expression; cysteine mutations in B/F strands impair protein folding and expression. CD8A defects lead to autosomal recessive familial CD8 deficiency, characterized by loss of CD8+T cells and recurrent bacterial infections.
| Synonyms | CD8A, CD8 alpha, CD8α, Leu2, MAL, p32 |
